Le ‘Rodwell trail’ est ancien chemin de fer qui reliait Weymouth et Portland et qui transportait des voyageurs et la fameuse pierre de Portland. Il fut fermé dans les années 60 et ré-ouvert en 2000 pour les piétons et cyclistes. La première fois que j’ai emprunté ce chemin, j’ai été frappé par sa structure, sa proximité avec la nature. Cette espèce de long tuyau entrecoupé de tunnel tagué me faisait penser au monde de ‘Stalker’ de Tarkovsky ou de ‘Spirited away’ de Miyazaki qui font naitre le sentiment étrange d’être épié par des esprits. Un parcours obligé à travers un décor oppressant mais en même temps fascinant et une arrivée ouverte sur l’océan et donc sur toutes sortes de possibilités. J’ai essayé de transmettre les émotions que je ressentais en traversant ce long couloir vers un éden imaginaire en observant les changements qu’engendrent les différentes saisons. Les gens que j’ai rencontrés pendant ce projet, qui étaient en vacances ou des habitués partagent la même fascination et un profond attachement à cet endroit. Je voudrais remercier Thomas, Alan et Veronica, Billy et Donna mais également d’autres passants y compris un fou de tunnels qui m’ont laissé les photographier.
The 'Rodwell Trail' is an old railway that connected Weymouth and Portland and transported travelers and the famous Portland Stone. It was closed in the 1960s and reopened in 2000 for pedestrians and cyclists. The first time I took this path, I was struck by its structure, its proximity to nature. This kind of long conduit including a graffitied tunnel made me think of the world of Tarkovsky's 'Stalker' or Miyazaki's 'Spirited Away', which gives rise to the strange feeling of being spied on by spirits. An obligatory course through an oppressive yet fascinating backdrop and an arrival at the ocean and so to all kinds of possibilities. I tried to convey the emotions that I felt while passing through this long corridor towards an imaginary Eden by observing the changes engendered by the different seasons. The people I encountered during this project either holiday makers or regular walkers share a common fascination and profound attachment to this place. I would like to give a big thank you to Thomas, Alan and Veronica, Billy and Donna but also other passersby including someone passionate about tunnels that let me photograph them in this special environment.
